Tardy Policy

The tardy bell rings at 8:25 am. Only valid notes written by a parent will be accepted if a student is late to school.  Valid excuses are traffic, illness, or car problems. To prevent abuse of the system, no more than three notes will be accepted during the school year. Students will then be assigned detentions which they must serve.  Students arriving after 30 minutes are considered truant.  Any tardy or truant student must report to the Attendance Office upon their arrival at school to procure a tardy admit for class.

Any student who is in the hall without a pass after the second bell rings will be assigned an automatic detention. A detention slip will be given to the student and the copy to the Assistant Principal.  The Assistant Principal will assign the date of the detention and forward the date of the detention to the student.  All staff who assign detentions will include the student’s name, staff name, and the time of day the detention was given.

All students will be advised of the following procedures:

  1. Any student not in his/her class by the time the second (tardy) bell rings will be issued a tardy detention notice.   A detention is to be assigned for each tardy.   Reminders are given to each student 24 hours in advance AND students are required to bring them home to the parent.  Forgetting to tell a parent is not an excuse for missing detention.
  2. Students must attend the assigned detention. If a student misses the detention, penalty detentions will be assigned. If there are more missed detentions, then either Saturday School, suspension, or other disciplinary consequences will occur.    Failure to serve Saturday School will result in suspension.
  3. Detentions may only be rescheduled if a student is absent with a valid excused note or phone call from a parent with a valid excuse. Sports, parties, and extra-curricular activities are not considered valid excuses to miss assigned detentions.

WESTBOROUGH HAS A ZERO TOLERANCE TARDY POLICY!

WHY? Tardy students disrupt the learning environment and steal classroom time from the teachers and other students. Students have enough time during passing periods to arrive on time to class. In order to facilitate this, students should organize their lockers, keep them clean, and plan ahead for what materials and books they need for class.

Habitual Tardies

If a student is tardy to school or to a class at least five times or more in month, that student will be considered as a “habitual tardy.”  Continual tardiness is an issue of defiance.  Students know they must be to class on time. A “habitual tardy” will receive his/her detention for each one of the five, but on the sixth tardy, he/she will receive:

  1. Saturday School (or 1 Day Suspension)
  2. Tardy Contract and Parent Notification via phone call or letter

If there is a 7th tardy:

  1. 2 Days Saturday School (or 2 Days Suspension)
  2. Parent Conference with Student and Assistant Principal

If there are more than 7 tardies in a month, the student will be assigned more Saturday School, Suspensions or other interventions where appropriate.
