Grade 8

3-D Design

This innovative course introduces students to the exciting and creative world of technical design. Students learn the basics of technical drawing using drafting tools, learn how to use a powerful computer modeling and drafting program, learn how to use the design process to develop creative solutions to real-world problems, and build models and examples of the products they design.

Art

An elective course for students in the 8th grade. If you would like to try a wide variety of art projects using different types of materials, this is the class for you. We will be working in a variety of media including ceramics, drawing and painting. In addition, students will be exposed to the history of various artistic styles, artists, and genres.

Computer Applications

This course is designed to familiarize students with computer technology and computer applications. Students are taught how to operate a pc and use digital cameras. Students will continue to practice proper keyboarding skills. Students will be provided with a variety of learning experiences which will encompass word processing, multimedia presentations and creating internet web pages. Programs used are: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 

Home Economics

A course designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop skills in Home Economics.  Students will experience hands-on activities in food preparation and sewing. In the foods area students work in learning groups to study and prepare a variety of foods. Nutrition, table etiquette and consumerism are also emphasized. The sewing section includes hand sewing techniques, the operation of a sewing machine and the construction of a sewing project.

Library Practice

Students assist the library media technician by shelving books, filing, typing, book repair and inventory, learning general office procedures, delivering messages and materials, computer maintenance and other varied duties. and helping the technician with a wide variety of tasks.

Prerequisite: Satisfactory achievement and attendance and the signature of the assistant principal and library media technician; 2.0 G.P.A., No “N’s” or “U’s” on report card

Math and language arts helps

These are grade-level intervention classes developed to help students who are in need of assistance in those academic areas. Courses are one semester in length, and may be repeated for further remediation. Students scoring at below basic or far below basic on CST tests are enrolled in these classes. In addition, students may be enrolled upon recommendation from the math or language arts instructor.

Music Appreciation

Students will learn and make up snare drum techniques and rhythms. Students will use a book and video to learn proper stick control. Students pass out drum pads and sticks daily. At the second quarter, students will work on drum equipment.

Office Practice

Students assist in the office and gain experiences in basic office procedures such as filing, stapling, collating, carrying messages, etc.

Prerequisite: Satisfactory achievement and attendance and the assistant principal’s and counselor’s recommendation; 2.0 G.P.A., No “N’s” or “U’s” on report card

Publications

Students will be responsible for creating the yearbook and a biannual school newspaper. Introductory digital photography and journalism skills will be taught in this year-long course. Students must apply for this course by filling out an application. Applications can be found in the main office.

Prerequisite: A minimum grade point average of a 3.0 or teacher recommendation is a prerequisite for this course.

Tech 8

The Tech 8 course combines different elements of industrial technology with woodworking. Students will learn basic drafting conventions so they can make and read a woodworking project plan. They will also learn some basic architectural design principles and draw a floor plan for a house, or will use a 3-D design software to design a product and build a prototype. Students will learn and follow shop, hand, and machine tool safety rules and practices as they complete two woodworking projects. Students will learn about structures and build a model bridge designed to support the maximum weight with a limited amount of materials used for construction. Students will also learn about the design process and how it is used to create a variety of products.
