Grade 7

Art

Students will discover, in this problem solving experience, that success and enjoyment go hand in hand with art. This class will include experiences in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional media.

CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS/AWARENESS

This class focuses on educating students about the cardiovascular system, and how to develop and maintain cardiovascular fitness. Students learn about resting heart rates, exercise heart rates, monitoring their own heart rate, and how to exercise in their target heart rate zone during a variety of lab experiences. Exercise labs include: Tae-Bo, stationary bike training, jump rope, walking, jogging, dancing, etc. Students utilize heart rate monitors during exercise labs. Nutrition is also touched on in this class. The course gives students the knowledge they need to incorporate and self-monitor cardiovascular training (aerobic exercise) throughout life.

Ceramics

In the Ceramics course, students will learn a variety of hand building techniques such as pinch, slab and coil. Students will also learn how to use under-glazes, glazes and a variety of decorative processes as they complete ceramic projects. Students will gain an appreciation of the importance and diversity of ceramic art work in different cultures as they complete a mask project.

Computers

Students will continue to practice and improve their two handed keyboarding skills. This course is designed to familiarize students with computer applications and technology. Students will learn how to use the following programs: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Students will also be introduced to how to use digital camera.

Math and language Arts Helps

These are grade-level intervention classes developed to help students who are in need of assistance in those academic areas. Courses are one semester in length, and may be repeated for further remediation. Students scoring at below basic or far below basic on CST tests are enrolled in these classes. In addition, students may be enrolled upon recommendation from the math or language arts instructor.

Music Appreciation

Students will learn about composers. Activities will include: Videos,  projects and research. Students will build a homemade instrument. Students will learn basic music theory and write music on manuscript paper. Activities may include playing the recorder or the piano.

Stock market

This class is designed to introduce students to the financial world. Students will be taught how to read, understand and follow the financial pages of the newspaper. We will cover the basics of stocks, while learning how to follow chart and graph a stock’s progress. Research techniques through business letter writing will be explored.   Students are encouraged to compete in the California Stock Market Competition and CNBC Competition.

World Cultures

Currently, students are offered beginning instruction in Spanish or Mandarin. These courses stress conversation, vocabulary building, and cultural awareness.

Wood Working

An exciting course designed to introduce student to the world of woodworking. Students will experience hands-on activities involving hand tools, design and woodworking techniques. Students will have the opportunity to complete at least one individual wood project.
