Grade 6

Art

This exploratory will emphasize the elements of art by exploring various techniques used by artists including but not limited to collage, paper mache, tempera, watercolor in 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional work. Students will become familiar with famous artists’ work through videos, prints and text.

Careers

This exploratory will focus on career awareness and education. The goals of this unit are to begin to introduce students to the world of work, to survey the many options of careers, and to explore ways people prepare for those careers.

Computers

Students will learn to type by touch only using the home row and proper posture with a goal of attaining 30 words per minute. Projects will include practice in the use of various Microsoft Office Programs such as Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel and Publisher. Other topics will include navigation of the internet, use of email, computer literacy terms and the history of the computer.

Home Economics

This is an introductory course to the basic techniques of Food Preparation and Hand Sewing. Elementary principles and concepts of nutrition, and philosophy of clothing and textiles are presented. Emphasis is on hands-on laboratory work in both units.

 

Math and language arts helps

These are grade-level intervention classes developed to help students who are in need of assistance in those academic areas. Courses are one semester in length, and may be repeated for further remediation. Students scoring at below basic or far below basic on CST tests are enrolled in these classes. In addition, students may be enrolled upon recommendation from the math or language arts instructor.

Music Appreciation

Students will learn basic music notation. Students will learn proper singing techniques such as breathing, enunciation, etc. Students will sing American folk songs. Students will learn about instrument families and the orchestra.

Wood Working

This beginning class in woodworking introduces students to common woodworking tools, materials and processes. The emphasis is on how to use tools and machines safely. Students will apply what they learn as they choose and complete a woodworking project.
