Behavior Guidelines

It is the responsibility of Westborough Middle School to provide a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment.  Students are responsible to conform to all state, district, school and classroom behavioral guidelines.

Teachers at Westborough set their own classroom standards within the guidelines of school and district policy.  Teachers are encouraged to set consequences (both positive and negative) for student behavior in the classroom. First, second, and third rule infractions occurring in the classroom are handled by the teacher.  Possible consequences may be, but are not limited to: parental contact, morning, lunch or after school teacher assigned detentions, written assignments, or extra school work.  Continued misconduct or violation of classroom rules will result in referral to the Assistant Principal for disciplinary action. Depending on the nature of the offense the Assistant Principal may: contact parents, assign after school detention, issue contracts for fights, behavior or tardies, refer to counseling, assign Saturday School, suspend, or notify police.

  1. Homeroom is time for silent reading.  Be sure you have a book to read.
  2. All textbooks must be covered.  You will be fined for any damages.
  3. Remember to use your assignment book to record all homework assignments.
  4. No overly affectionate fraternization with the opposite sex is allowed on school grounds.  Kissing or other overt displays of affection are considered inappropriate.
  5. No running is allowed in the hallways, stairwells, classrooms, buildings, or the patio area. No rough housing, play fighting, or games involving physical contact is allowed on the Westborough Campus. The cardinal rule is “keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  6. Food is only allowed in the MUR/Cafeteria or designated eating area—not in the main building. Gum and sunflower seeds are not allowed on campus.
  7. No selling or exchange of money is allowed for any items among students.
  8. Keep our campus clean. Use trash cans.
  9. The road in front of the sixth grade wing is considered an outdoor “hallway”.  Students are to stay out of the road unless crossing to the main buildings or 6th grade wing. Students should wait on the benches or on the grass and not block doorways into the main buildings until classes open in the 6th grade wing at 8:10 a.m.
  10. All students must be out of the building by 3:10 P.M. unless under direct teacher supervision.

Closed Campus

Westborough has a closed campus.  Students are not permitted to leave campus after arriving to school in the morning without a note presented to the Attendance Secretary. Students who leave campus without permission will be considered truant.

All visitors must check-in to the main office, sign in, and receive a visitor’s badge. If you are here to pick up a child, be prepared to present ID, and you must be listed on the child’s emergency form!

Bike/ Skateboard/ Rollerblade/ Scooter Policy

Students must walk bikes on and off campus. California State Law now mandates that children under the age of 18 MUST wear a helmet when cycling. Bicycles should be kept locked in the bike rack near the main office. Rollerblades are not allowed on campus. Skateboards are not allowed until proper storage is in place. Scooters may be stored in lockers but not ridden on campus. The school assumes no responsibility for damage or stolen bicycles, skateboards, or scooters.

Mini-bikes and motorbikes are also prohibited on campus.

Phones and Electronic Devices

Electronic listening devices are not allowed on campus (cell phones, radios, CD player, Gameboys, iPods, digital cameras etc.) and other items not needed for instruction. Found items will be confiscated and returned to a parent after school. IF AN ITEM IS CONFISCATED A SECOND TIME, PARENTS MAY PICK THEM UP AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

Parents: Please help us with this! If the staff sees or hears and electronic device out on campus; they will confiscate it and bring it to the Assistant Principal. If you need to reach your child at school, please call the main office. Students should not be using cell phones on campus. If your child wishes to contact you after school, they may do so outside the fence on the sidewalk.

Please also be aware that it is not acceptable for students to use video devices to tape teachers or students, unless it relates directly to instruction (i.e. projects). Students who bring expensive recording devices on campus do so at their own risk. The school is not liable for damage or loss.
