Beginning / Intermediate Band

This course is open to students in grades 6 – 8. Students do not need to have any prior musical knowledge to participate in this class. Students will need to lease, purchase or borrow an instrument for this class. If a student plans to borrow a school instrument, he/she may not be able to borrow the instrument he/she prefers. Students learn the fundamentals of music notation, rhythm, intonation, self-discipline, teamwork and posture. Students must participate in concerts throughout the year. Students are expected to wear concert attire for the performances. Students enrolled are committed to one full year. Beginning band students will receive extra help either during homeroom or during class.

Advanced Band

Students must understand all of the concepts taught in beginning and intermediate band.  Students will work on more advanced music theory, scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats, more intricate rhythms, etc. All advanced band students are expected to practice their instruments at home and to be motivated to become more proficient instrumentalists. Students will participate in concerts throughout the year and perform at SSFHS for the Festival of Bands. Students may participate in the solo/ensemble festival. Students will perform at the elementary schools, as well as perform in the concert. Students enrolled are committed to one full year.

Prerequisite: All students must be recommended by the teacher or audition for advanced band.   Students must have good home practice skills.
