Attendance and Grading Policy

It is the Westborough philosophy that a student have good attendance in order to be successful academically. Therefore, the following policies have been developed to relate class attendance with academic grades.

A student who is absent from an entire class period will have his/her grade restricted as follows:

A. Within one quarter:

  • 5-7 absences - a student can receive no higher than a B.
  • 8 -10 absences - a student can receive no higher than a C.
  • 11-13 absences- a student can receive no higher than a D.
  • 14 absences - a student can receive no higher than an F.

B. Under certain circumstances the above penalties shall be waived:

  1. A student who falls in the above category may file a petition to be eligible for a higher grade. Said petitions are available in the counselor’s office and may be filed as soon as the student's absence falls within any of the above categories. Petitions must be filed no later than two weeks after the end of the grading period. Make-up work and waiving a grade because of the petition are at the discretion of the appropriate teacher.
  2. Students missing class for school related activities must make prior arrangements to meet class requirements. These days are exempt from the attendance rule above.

THREE DAY TRUANCY - A student who has three or more truancies (unexcused absences) from a class in a quarter will risk failing the class for the quarter. The student will be required to attend a conference with their parents/guardian and a school administrator.

SIX DAY TRUANCY - A student who has more than six truancies in a class during a semester may fail that class for the semester.
